ITV have staked their claim to being one of the best when it comes to producing compelling TV drama. With massively popular shows such as Downton Abbey, Vera, Whitechapel, Doc Martin and Mr Selfridge, ITV have shown that they know drama, and how to do it well. And what’s most exciting for us at Angels the Costumiers is that we’ve been privileged to contribute in some small part to these wonderful TV programmes by providing a few of the costumes for Doc Martin, Downton Abbey, Vera and Whitechapel
We are proud to have the opportunity to dress some of the UK’s favourite TV characters and love having a part (however small!) in bringing these TV Shows and their characters to life.
Doc Martin is a contemporary medical show, detailing the eccentric adventures of a former City surgeon, played by Martin Clunes, who relocates to a seaside town in Cornwall. The show – the right mixture of comedy and drama for a weekend night – has been a massive ratings success for ITV across the world. The format has been sold to six other European countries, all producing their own individual spin on the show.
Martin’s suit is a vital component of his character. He is never seen in casual wear, and even wears his suit on the weekend. Perhaps it is a sign that he is uncomfortable in his location, but it seems to be a clearer sign of his difference from the locals in the village. The female costume has a sunny floral pattern, as a nod to the sunny reputation of Cornwall, with a 50s style coat which suggests that the residents of Port Wenn are a little old fashioned.
