The stars of the big screen were out in force on Sunday evening for the 2014 Baftas, and there were more than a few surprise wins on the night. In fact, it was a bit of a mixed bag for many of the nominated films.
Gravity won six awards, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuarón, but failed to pick up the Bafta for Best Film – that award instead went to 12 Years a Slave.
Great-Gatsby_320x480for blogMany were surprised to see 12 Years a Slave only achieve two awards – the other being Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor – not least because both Lupita Nyong’o and Michael Fassbender were hotly tipped to walk away with the Best Supporting Actress and Actor awards – instead Jennifer Lawrence won for her performance in American Hustle and Barkhad Abdi for Captain Philips.
But it was the category of Best Costume Design that really had the entire Angels team excited. Of the five wonderful movies nominated in this category, Angels the Costumiers provided costumes for two – The Great Gatsby and The Invisible Woman – and we’re thrilled that Catherine Martin won the award for her work on The Great Gatsby.
With her stunning costumes, Martin was able to recreate the glitz and glamour of the Roaring Twenties, transporting us to a time of decadence and excess where, for the characters, anything was possible and nothing was beyond their reach.
Martin already has a Bafta and an Oscar for her work on previous films and has been nominated in the Best Achievement in Costume Design category at next months Academy Awards.
Congratulations to Catherine on her Bafta win! We wish her luck at the Oscars!
Angels The Costumiers has been providing costumes for theatre, TV and Film for well over 150 years. You can see more of our film credits here.
